Our journey:
Our exciting motorcycle tour begins in Avram Iancu (Vârfurile), at the foot of the majestic Apuseni Mountains. On the very first stage, we ride along winding roads up to Vârtopu and into a hidden valley that enchants us with its natural beauty. Passing the glittering Belis-Fântânele reservoir, we reach the Turda region, where we spend our first night.
In the colorful old town of Sighișoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we immerse ourselves in the history of Transylvania and admire the impressive architecture and charm of the city. In Sibiu (Hermannstadt), the lively market square and numerous stores invite you to stroll and discover. There is plenty of time here to enjoy the atmosphere of these historic cities to the full.
Our journey of discovery continues to the impressive Bicaz region, where the spectacular Cheile Bicazului (Bicaz Gorge) will captivate us with its dramatic landscape before we reach Brașov (Brasov). Here we spend a well-deserved rest day in a stylish hotel. You have the opportunity to visit the bear reserve, the impressive Black Church in Brașov, the peasant castle in Râșnov or the legendary Dracula Castle in Bran and other sights.
Freshly refreshed, we continue our journey and take the legendary Transfăgărășan under our wheels - an absolute highlight that will delight us with its breathtaking views and unforgettable photo stops. Afterwards, the curves and heights of the Transalpina, one of the most spectacular roads in Europe, await us, which is also a highlight of our trip.
Finally, we take the winding roads back to the Apuseni Mountains and return to our starting point in Avram Iancu. This trip promises not only unforgettable experiences, but also the opportunity to experience Romania's breathtaking nature and rich culture up close - a true adventure for every motorcyclist!
Day 1: On a discovery tour through the Apuseni Mountains (approx. 310 km)
We set off from Avram Iancu (Vârfurile) at 09:00 and enjoy the winding roads of the Apuseni Mountains. This first stage of 270 km already gives us a taste of the exciting experiences that await us in the coming days. After a day full of impressive landscapes and riding pleasure, we bring the first day of our adventure to a leisurely close.
Day 2: From the Apuseni Mountains to Sibiu (approx. 310 km)
Our journey continues through the picturesque Apuseni mountain range, past Alba Iulia, to the charming Sibiu (Hermannstadt), our destination for today and the geographical center of Romania. In recent years, Sibiu has developed into one of the most beautiful cities in the country. With its charming medieval city center, rich history and impressive monuments, Sibiu is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Romania. Numerous stores invite you to stroll and shop, and the beautiful market square is a wonderful place to stroll and enjoy the lively atmosphere to the full.
Day 3: On the trail of history in Sighișoara (approx. 250 km)
With the majestic Southern Carpathians on our right, we make our way to Sighișoara (Sighisoara), one of the most historically significant cities in Transylvania. No other place in this region steeped in history brings the past to life like the colorful and authentic upper town of Sighișoara. After a relaxing ride, we arrive early at our destination for the day and have plenty of time to explore the city at length.
Visit the city's landmark, the imposing Sighisoara Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets of the upper town, which still exude the charm of the Middle Ages. The city is also closely associated with the legend of Dracula: Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, is said to have been born here. What is certain, however, is that his father, Vlad II. Dracul (the Dragon), lived in Sighișoara for many years. His house, located in the old town, can still be visited today.
Day 4: ride to the north-east - Ceahlău National Park (approx. 230 km)
Today's stage takes us to the north-east of Romania, to the impressive Ceahlău National Park and the mountains of the same name. Our destination is the picturesque Izvorul Muntelui reservoir, which stretches over 40 kilometers and is 2 kilometers wide. Located right on the edge of the national park, we spend the night surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery, offering us relaxation and tranquillity in a unique environment.
Day 5: Through the Bicaz Gorge to Brașov (approx. 300 km)
We follow the banks of Lacul Izvorul Muntelui and head towards Bicaz, into the impressive Hășmaș Mountains. Our route takes us through the breathtaking Cheile Bicazului (Bicaz Gorge), past the picturesque Lacul Roșu (Red Lake), and over the Pângărați Pass to Gheorgheni (Niklas Market), before we finally reach Brașov. In Bicaz-Chei, we will probably meet a few other motorcyclists, as the impressive landscape and winding road are a popular meeting point for bikers. Once we arrive in Brașov, a comfortable hotel awaits us, which serves as an ideal starting point for our excursions on the upcoming rest day.
Day 6: Rest day in Brașov - time to explore and relax
On the rest day, you have the opportunity to take part in our optional supporting program: Together we will visit the world's largest bear sanctuary, where over 100 bears rescued from captivity and adverse circumstances have found a new, species-appropriate home. In the huge free-range enclosure, separated only by an electric fence, you can experience first-hand how these majestic animals now live in the wild. The visit is only possible as part of a guided tour. The fee you pay will be donated in full to the bear sanctuary, which relies exclusively on donations. (Contribution towards expenses: 10.00 EUR/person; admission: 65.00 or 70.00 RON/person, approx. 13.00 to 14.00 EUR)
Alternatively, you can organize the day according to your own preferences: Relax in Brașov or explore sights such as the imposing Black Church, the peasant castle in Râșnov or the famous Dracula Castle in Bran. Perhaps you would also like to stroll through Strada Sforii, one of the narrowest streets in Europe, or visit the impressive Prejmer Fortress Church - all destinations are easily accessible and offer exciting insights into the culture and history of the region.
Day 7: Off to the legendary Transfăgărășan (approx. 280 km)
Ahead of us lies the famous Transfăgărășan, which at 148 kilometers is the second highest road in Romania and is considered one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world. With a bit of luck, one of the mighty Carpathian bears that are frequently spotted here might even be waiting for us at the side of the road. On the Transfăgărășan, you need to ride particularly carefully: Stay behind the tour guide and follow his instructions exactly! Even if the bears are often hoping to be fed, you must not forget that they are wild, powerful and unpredictable inhabitants of the Romanian forests. Their encounters always provide a thrill, but also unforgettable moments.
Since September 2024, feeding the bears on the Transfăgărășan has been strictly prohibited and punishable by heavy fines - who knows how much longer we will be able to experience these majestic animals up close?
Day 8: The highest road in Romania - Transalpina (approx. 210 km)
Another highlight is on the program today: the Transalpina, officially known as Drum național 67C. It is the highest pass road in Romania and takes us through the majestic Transylvanian Alps. The route connects the Gorj region in Lesser Wallachia with Alba County in Transylvania and reaches impressive altitudes of over 2100 meters. As we ride along this breathtaking panoramic road, you will enjoy the grandiose expanse and the winding route. Keep in mind that it can be chilly up here even in summer, so dress accordingly to enjoy not only the spectacular views but also the ride in a relaxed manner. We reach the Târgu Jiu region in the evening and round off the eventful day in comfortable accommodation.
Day 9: Through the Jiului Canyon to Sebeș (approx. 200 km)
After two impressive days, another spectacular stage awaits us today. We cross the Carpathians for the third time, this time on a new route that takes us right through the Defileul Jiului National Park. The wild beauty of the canyon with its steep rock faces and dense forests offers breathtaking views and exciting bends. Finally, we reach Sebeș, where we relax and let the day's experiences come to an end.
Day 10: Farewell and memories (approx. 220 km)
The adventure is not over yet! Today we visit the impressive Castelul Corvinilor (Hunedoara Castle) and enjoy a last look at this architectural beauty. The castle, known for its imposing appearance, has also served as a film set for national and international productions - among others, some scenes of Ghost Rider 2 with Nicolas Cage were shot here.
With a backpack full of memories and unforgettable experiences, we return to Avram Iancu (Vârfurile), where we bring our adventure to a fitting end. The roads of Romania have not only given us breathtaking landscapes, but also fascinating encounters and lasting friendships.
