9 days Kenya
9 Days - Northern Kenya, Lake Baringo & Mugie Conservancy
This tour takes you from the Soysambu Conservation, where you can see giraffes, gazelles and zebras on two wheels at close range, to Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley. There is a large population of hippos and crocodiles here. From Lake Baringo we ride up the escarpment and on to the Mugie Conservation. The game viewing opportunities here are fantastic: there are lions, elephants and lots of plains game to see. There is also the option to take a half day drive to Malesso and join a game drive in the late afternoon. The accommodation varies between twin rooms, single rooms and tents.
Day 1 - Arrival in Nairobi:
You will be picked up from the airport and driven to the Tamarind Tree Hotel (or comparable) where you will spend the first night.
Day 2 - Conservancy:
Early in the morning you will be picked up in Nairobi and after a three hour drive, we will arrive at Punda Milias Camp where you will meet your escort team. After a briefing on the motorcycles and safety during the ride, we are off! The Conservancy is home to a variety of plains game, zebras, giraffes, gazelles, buffalos and other animals. The ride up and around the conservancy is incredibly beautiful and watching the animals from the seat of your motorcycle is a once in a lifetime experience. We will spend the night at Punda Milias Camp.
Day 3 - Exploring the area:
Today we will spend the whole day exploring the Soysambu Conservancy. You have the choice between a picnic lunch on the way or lunch at the camp. There are countless trails you can ride here, with varying degrees of difficulty from intermediate to very technical enduro riding. Fun is guaranteed for everyone! We will spend the night again at Punda Milias Camp.
Day 4 - Ripe for the island:
After breakfast we will ride from Punda Milias Camp to Lake Baringo. The ride takes us through sisal plantations, down to Maji Moto and on to Kampi Ya Samaki on Lake Baringo. After about 200 km and 5 hours of riding we will leave the enduros on the mainland and take the boat to Island Camp. We spend the night at Sandai Resort or Tamarind Tree Hotel or at a campsite (optional at Island Camp, which is located on an island in Lake Baringo).
Day 5 - Hippopotamus:
Early in the morning we start our day with a boat ride to see hippos and crocodiles before preparing for the day's ride. Today, we will ride up into the mountains to Kabartonjo and Karbarnet. Enjoy the incredible views! After a traditional al fresco meal for lunch we will ride back to our campsite.
Day 6 - Mugie Conservancy:
From the Rift Valley we will ride up the escarpment to the western Laikipia Plateau. We will reach the Mugie Conservation Area where we will spend the night at the Mugie campsite. After lunch we will go on a game drive and with a little luck, we may see elephants and plains game.
Day 7 - Enjoy the view:
Right after breakfast today we will ride to Malesso where an incredible view awaits us. The terrain changes from black cotton earth to red earth and we will ride north through small farms and villages. After a lunch in the countryside we will ride back to the Mugie campsite. In the late afternoon there is the possibility of doing another game drive. Overnight, we will again stay at the Mugie campsite.
Day 8 - Slowly heading towards home:
After breakfast we leave Mugie and ride to Rumuruti. From there, the trail leads us back to the highlands of Nyaharuru. Once we have left this behind us we will continue into the Great Rift Valley, which you already know, and onwards to the Soysambu Conservancy. We will spend the last night in the cozy Punda Milias Camp.
Day 9 - Departure:
In the morning you will return to Nairobi by car. Optionally, you can visit the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum before heading back to the airport.
